South Burnett internet users should be very wary about opening unexpected invoices from businesses – even local companies – if you know you have not used their services recently.
An email which southburnett.com.au received several times on Wednesday appears to come from a legitimate Kingaroy business (and we note it has been cc’d to multiple other local businesses).
However, the source code suggests it did not originate from the business named.
It starts: “Hi New invoice” and includes the legitimate name and address of a Kingaroy business and has a file “Scan.zip” attached.
South Burnett Online would strongly recommend that this email and the attached Zip file be deleted.
If you have opened the Zip file, we recommend you immediately run an up-to-date virus checker through your PC and / or take professional advice from a computer technician.
Many Zip files attached in this fashion can unload “ransomware” onto your computer that locks your files until money is sent overseas, or could be part of an elaborate phishing attack to record keystrokes to detect bank passwords etc.
If you have been notified by friends or other businesses that they have been receiving false emails from your business, it is possible your website, server or individual computers have been targeted by hackers. Again, please get expert advice immediately.
