Kingaroy State High School Year 11 student Cortney Sonter wants a career in engineering so she jumped at the chance to take a trip across to Toowoomba today for a hands-on look at the University of Southern Queensland’s programs.

USQ’s Student Experience Day on Thursday attracted more than 400 students keen to sample uni life.

“I really enjoyed the mechanical and electrical engineering talk. We got to build little motors and run them – it was really cool,” Cortney said.

“It was interesting to see how everything worked.”

Year 11 and 12 students from across the region spent the day on campus, chatting with current students and attending various interactive sessions.

Cortney’s classmate James Christensen is also considering engineering as a post-school study choice.

“I’m not sure, I’m still thinking about it,” he said.

“I didn’t really have an idea of what university was like. I’ve enjoyed today and the staff seemed really helpful.”

Vice-Chancellor Prof Jan Thomas said moving from high school to university was a big step and events such as the Student Experience Day helped future students get answers to important questions.

Students from 21 southern Queensland schools took part including Kingaroy SHS and Nanango SHS.
