Australian-trained international medical graduates are to join Kingaroy Hospital team as interns, Federal Member for Maranoa Bruce Scott said today.
“These medical graduates will undertake Federal Government-funded internships under the 2015 Commonwealth Medical Internship (CMI) initiative,” Mr Scott said.
“Many regional and rural communities in my electorate rely on doctors from overseas to support their local health care needs so this is a great announcement for the South Burnett.”
The Federal Government has committed $40 million over four years to support the placement of up to 100 extra medical interns each year through the CMI initiative.
Mr Scott said the interns were required to spend 48 weeks in a regional, rural or remote location.
“By giving medical graduates an opportunity to live and work in Kingaroy, this will enhance and broaden their experience as doctors,” he said.
“Practising medicine in a regional community offers interns a different experience to that of capital cities and will offer them a rewarding experience by being included in the South Burnett community.”
