Jye Hopkins puts Kingaroy’s first points on the board … but they had plenty more to come

May 1, 2015

It was a big day for Murgon rugby league club on Anzac Day … they unveiled their new jerseys, their canteen almost sold out and the bar was kept busy.

Unfortunately, the Mustangs’ good fortune didn’t translate to success on the field with the home team losing each of their games against Kingaroy.

The junior footballers played the first round of their competitions, but the A Graders, still two weeks away from their Round 1 on May 9, played another pre-season match.

The senior Mustangs were under-strength – fielding many U18s – so their 44-12 defeat in a sometimes fiery encounter isn’t much of a guide to what they’ll be like when the real season opens.

Murgon put the first points of the board but Kingaroy immediately replied and then scored three more times before half-time.

At the break, the Red Ants led 24-4.

Kingaroy resumed their winning ways in the second half, with two quick tries before Murgon hit back, scoring two of their own – including a length-of-the-field run by Steve Watcho who finished it off by diving under the posts.

With about 12 minutes left to go, a Murgon player was sin binned, and soon afterwards both captains agreed to call the game off.

The final score was Kingaroy 44 – Murgon 12.

For Kingaroy, tries were scored by Mick Smallwood (3), Brodie Hatchman (2), Carl Freeman, Jayden Jarvis and Jye Hopkins; goals were kicked by Jayden Jarvis (3) and Mitch Crossley (3),

For Murgon, tries were scored by Gordon Forua (2) and Steve Watcho.

An Anzac Day commemoration was held before the start of the main A Grade match between Murgon and Kingaroy
