During the South Burnett floods a number of idiots drove through water across the road, some got away with it, some didn’t … a 4WD is not a boat, don’t put your life and the lives of emergency workers at risk

As storms roll in across southern Queensland, the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services is again reminding residents to avoid flood waters.

QFES South Western Region Assistant Commissioner Tom Dawson urged residents to exercise common sense and patience.

“It only takes 30cm of moving water to sweep a car away and even less to potentially stall an engine,” Mr Dawson said.

“Choose an alternate route if possible or wait for waters to recede, and never attempt to enter floodwater either on foot or in a vehicle.

“Floodwater can mask hidden dangers such as debris, eroded areas that are deeper than they appear, or strong currents.”

State Emergency Services (Regional Manager Robert Bundy said residents should also be on the look out to help travellers who may not know local areas prone to flash flooding.

“Residents can assist travellers by providing local knowledge as wet weather continues across the region,” Mr Bundy said.

“Travellers who do become trapped in floodwater should call Triple Zero immediately, or ask someone nearby to call for them.

“Likewise, if you see someone trapped in floodwaters, immediately report the situation by calling Triple Zero. Don’t enter the water if it can be avoided.”
