Revellers descended on Kingaroy Town Hall on Saturday night for the annual Cabaret Ball, the traditional curtain-raiser for the upcoming Kingaroy Show.
More than 80 guests booked in for the pre-Ball dinner served in the Town Hall Supper Room by Judy Crawford and her team from JC Catering, while a further 50 came along for refreshments, dancing, socialising and a late supper courtesy of the Inverlaw Hall committee.
The centrepiece of the Ball was, of course, the judging and naming of this year’s Miss Showgirl and Rural Ambassador, as well as Junior Miss Showgirl and Junior Rural Ambassador, and Show Prince and Princess.
Judges Marion Campbell, Kingaroy State High School principal Ashley Roediger and Yarraman P-9 principal Carmel McKeering put this year’s six Miss Showgirl and Rural Ambassador entrants through a structured interview for two hours earlier in the day.
But as the nervous entrants soon found out, that was only half the judging process.
Compere Keith Campbell introduced each of them to the Ball audience and then asked them off-the-cuff questions to see how well they conducted themselves in front of a crowd, while the judges busily took notes.
In the end – after an impromptu Chicken Dance called to select the Junior Miss Showgirl and Junior Rural Ambassador winners (Sarah Winston and Tymika Brenner) and the Show Prince and Princess (Dane and Ellenor Andersson) – Kirsty Tigell was crowned 2015’s Miss Showgirl.
2014 Miss Showgirl Melissa O’Hanlon was named this year’s Rural Ambassador.
South Burnett National Show Society President Cliff Seiler praised all the entrants, saying they reflected extremely well on the region’s youth.
The winners of Miss Showgirl and Rural Ambassador will go on to represent Kingaroy at the sub-chamber finals in Nanango in June against other South Burnett Show Society winners.
Mr Seiler also praised the Show Society’s many supporters who made the show – and the Show Ball – possible, and Show Ball organiser Ros Tigell for the effort she had put into decorating the Town Hall.
This year’s Kingaroy Show will be held on May 2-3 and will mark the Show Society’s 108th birthday.
Thank you to everyone who helped make the ball a wonderful success. Thank you to the wonderful group of Showgirl and Rural ambassador entrants. Congratulations Mel and Kirsty. The judges have agreed you were a wonderful group of entrants and picking a winner was difficult. Thank you to all of the sponsors.
