Kingaroy News

Last Saturday saw the semi-finals and final of the 2015 Mens Open at the Kingaroy Bowls Club.

Players were required to reach a score of 25 to win, and the competition was keen.

In the first game, Glen Turner played Col Kratzmann and in the second, Malcolm MacLeod played Greg Schulz.

Both games were tight, with the lead changing regularly.

In the first game the scores were close until Glen Turner finally skipped away to record a 25 to 17 victory.

The second semi final was even closer, with Greg Schulz jumping to an early lead.

He maintained a narrow advantage for most of the match and with the goal post in sight led 22 to 20.

The pressure must have been too much at that stage, though: MacLeod got in front for the first time in the battle, went to a lead of 23 to 22 and finally closed the game out 25 to 22.

The final attracted quite a gallery, and weather conditions were ideal.

A close contest was anticipated because both finalists had played extremely well to win their respective semi-finals.

Initially, Turner got away to an ideal start and after 4 ends held a 10 to 0 lead.

But an undaunted MacLeod played steadily and got himself back into the game, taking a slender lead of 12 to 11 after 14 ends.

Once again, the tide turned. Turner applied pressure and with some superb draw bowls, regained the lead and eventually ran out victorious 25 to 16,

On Sunday, twelve teams took part in the ever popular Jackpot Pairs.

Each team played two games of 18 ends, the winners being decided by the amount of games won combined with the overall margins.

Only two teams were able to achieve two wins and one point on margin separated the two.

  • Winners: Alan Irwin and Ray Maclaren – 2 wins plus 14 margin
  • Runners Up: Marj Moore and Eric Ford – 2 wins plus 13 margin

It was a very hot day on Tuesday, and this kept numbers down.

But it led to a new innovation being tried: Rotational Triples, which involved each of the three players changing playing position during the course of the game.

The concept was well received. although it took some players out of their comfort zone.

The winners? Kevin Boland, Geoff Clutterbuck and Kev Raffin defeated Darcy Munro, Dave Barwick and Alan Irwin 26-12.

And on Thursday, in Pairs and Triples:

  • Gladys Slatter and Alan Rogeron def. John Lacey and Ross Olsson 24-18
  • Maree Millard and Dave Clapperton def. Eric Ford and Kev Raffin 20-18
  • Darcy Munro, Bob Bougoure and Alan Irwin def. Bevan Askew, Geoff Clutterbuck and Dave Barwick 23-15

The first four ends were all Yeates’. and he went to a 9-nil lead.

But by the tenth end the scores were 11-all.

Fowler then skipped away to a good lead only for Yeates to fight back to 19-all on the 19th end.

Yeates thought he had all avenues covered on the last end and held 2 shots, only to see Fowler drive at the head and hitting the kitty. But instead of it going dead as was expected, it hit a back bowl flying in the air and went back into the ditch, giving Fowler four shots and the game 23 to 20.
