There’s been good news and bad news for South Burnett Rugby League fans on Tuesday … more teams have joined this year’s senior competition which means more varied games; the bad news is that the draw released last month will have to be significantly updated.
Originally, North Burnett teams were only going to participate in Round 10 but after a vote this week, Gayndah, Mundubbera and Monto – and most likely Eidsvold – will take part in a joint competition over five weekends.
South Burnett Rugby League president Greg Pomfret said the introduction of the northern teams would mean the South Burnett sides would only be playing each other twice, rather than three times.
Three of the five matches will be played in the South Burnett and two in the North Burnett. Points from all games will count on the South Burnett competition ladder.
The five weekends will be inserted into the mid-year games schedule, but the final draw is still being worked on.
Greg said the changes would not affect the first three rounds, which will go ahead as previously published from May 9.
The northern teams will be competing against Cherbourg, Murgon, Wondai and Kingaroy. At the moment, there is a question mark over whether the Nanango Stags will be able to field an A Grade team, but Greg is still hopeful they will be able to take part.
