Murgon Crusaders iced the cake on their big club reunion day on Saturday by making very sure Kingaroy weren’t going to take home a fourth straight A Grade cricket premiership.
Kingaroy RSL Services batted first in the grand final and by the end of their 40th over were 9/149.
Father and son combination Ashley and Jared Sippel proved a nightmare for the reigning champions.
Jared – later named the Wide Bay Junior Cricketer of the Year – took 4/25 off his nine overs.
His dad Ashley ran out Kingaroy opener – and top scorer – Wayne Kelly for 36.
Ashley also took a catch to send Kingaroy No 3, Mark Schmidt, back to the pavilion for just 18 runs after he looked to be making a start.
And to top it off, Ashley (1/7 off one over) sent down the ball at the deathknell that lured Alex Dempster (5) into sending a catch to Mark Eisenmenger.
In reply, the Crusaders – the 2014-15 minor premiers – got off to a shaky start with the loss of opener Daniel Thompson, caught behind by wicket-keeper Chris O’Rourke for a duck in the first over.
Kingaroy bowler Tony Dugdell then took the second of his three wickets when Murgon No 3 Stuart Robinson was adjudged lbw for 2.
Murgon were 2/5 when Mark Eisenmenger came to the crease and immediately got stuck into the bowling.
Eisenmenger and opener Jason Webber then methodically set about building a match-winning partnership of 128 that a frustrated string of Kingaroy bowlers could not break.
Webber eventually fell when he was caught out of his crease at the non-striker’s end, run out for 35.
Jared Sippel then came in and held up his end while Eisenmenger continued hitting fours.
Jared was eventually bowled by Dugdell on the very last ball of the match for 5 but the damage was done with Murgon reaching the target of 150.
Eisenmenger finished with 88 not out off 105 balls, but could be counted lucky as there were a few chances during his innings that Kingaroy’s fielders just couldn’t capitalise on.
Dugdell worked hard and bowled tightly. He finished with 3/18 off his nine overs, including two maidens.
The Crusaders’ dominating batting performance, over-running Kingaroy in the 34th over, pleased the large crowd of Murgon supporters who had gathered at Murgon Sportsground for the reunion which then continued late into the night.
