Kingaroy Ladies Bowls Carnival

Twenty-two teams from throughout South East Queensland converged on the Kingaroy Bowls Club last week to participate in the annual Ladies Kia-Ora Carnival.

Teams came from as far away as Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Tara, Chinchilla and throughout the North and South Burnett.

The carnival was held on Tuesday, March 10 and Wednesday. March 11.

On Day One two games of 21 ends were played, and on Day Two, 2 games of 18 ends.

The quality of play was of a very high level and at the end of the first day only four teams were on two wins.

On the second day, though, warm weather combined with a blustery breeze made conditions difficult – so much so that by the end of the first game there were only two teams with a maximum score

And the final outcome was just one team with the maximum 4 wins

Results:

  • Winners: Tewantin Noosa/Palmwoods Bowls Club – 4 wins, 52 ends (Valma Lynch, Claudia Cartwright, Pam Styles, Yvonne Ambrey)
  • Runners Up: Wondai – 3 wins, 46 ends (Jan Andresen, Margaret, Wyatt, Del Lane, Hazel Keding)
  • Third: Bribie Island Bowls Club – 3 wins, 45 ends (Megan Garfield, Irene Smith, Mandy McIntyre, Isabelle McLaren)
  • Fourth: Binjour Bowls Club – 3 wins, 42 ends.
  • Fifth: Tewantin Noosa Bowls Club – 3 wins. 41 ends, margin 40
  • Sixth: North Toowoomba Bowls Club – 3 wins. 41 ends, margin 21

Yarraman News

Only one game of the club championships was played this week – the second semi-final of the Mens Pairs – and the gallery was packed on Friday afternoon..

John Moore with lead Todd Currell defeated Brian Dugdell and George Wolski 18-17 over 21 ends.

Moore won the mat and skipped away to a very handy lead of 16-9 after 13 ends, and led 18-11 after 17 ends.

Then Dugdell and Wolski put on some real pressure, winning the last four ends with a total of 6, before finally going down 18-17.

A violent storm arrived at the start of the final end – so violent that ICC Umpire Billy Bowden would have raised his crooked finger and called for the green to be covered.

But the players simply donned rain gear and elected to play on.

The gallery were thoroughly entertained.

Wednesday social results:

  • Sandra and Neil Currell def Alison Anderson and Jenny Moore 20-6
  • Arthur Smith, Leo Robinson and John Moore def. Wayne Emms, Lorri Holmes and Neil Currell 10-4
  • Sandra and Di Currell 20 def Alison Anderson and John Moore 20-6

The Thursday night social was also a sausage sizzle night:

  • Kerry Walsh and Brian Dugdell def. Kenny Walsh and Neil Johnson 24-14
  • Arthur Smith, Eunice Smith and Alison Anderson def. Wayne Emms, Sandra and Todd Currell 20-12
After 20 ends of the Men’s Pairs semi-final, Brian Dugdell was 18-16 down; despite intense concentration, he was only able to score a single and lost the match 18-17 (Photo: Jim Bond)
