Thomas and Kristy Carroll are very proud parents after their son Cody scored a brace for South West Qld Thunder in his second match for the club, as well as assisting in the scoring of a third goal.

Cody Carroll and fellow Kingaroy Junior Redback team mate Ben Weier tried out for the SWQ Thunder Under 12s side late last year and both were selected in the team.

It takes a lot of dedication from the parents, who not only have to drive their offspring to games in Toowoomba and Brisbane each week but also to training in Toowoomba once a week, too.

Both families are still very much involved with local football.

Thomas is the Redbacks’ President, and Wayne and Shelley Weier are both on the Redbacks committee.

I am sure we have not seen the best of Cody and Ben yet, and look forward to hearing of their weekly exploits and their future development.

Westfield FFA Cup Kicks Off In SWQ

For the first time, the Westfield FFA Cup 2015 competition will include clubs across all States and Territories, and all Queensland clubs with Senior Men’s teams were invited to participate

This year the Westfield FFA Cup will operate as a true national competition.

Football Queensland is responsible for conducting the Queensland Preliminary Rounds of the competition and identifying four winners to represent Queensland in the “Round of 32” stage.

FFA will then run the competition from that point. Four Queensland qualifying clubs will be drawn against opposition from across the country, including A-League Clubs.

The Preliminary Rounds will operate within a consistent national structure whereby club entry into the competition will be staggered in each State/Territory, with the winning clubs from Round 7 in each Member Federation gaining direct entry into the Westfield FFA Cup 2015 Final Rounds (ie Round of 32 and beyond).

Rounds 1 to 3 will see matches scheduled by Football Queensland in each Zone within nominated playing “windows” to determine regional winners.

Regional winners in SWQ will then have the opportunity to play off against their local National Premier League Club SWQ Thunder, which is seeded in Round 4.

Round 5-7 matches may involve inter-region travel to determine which clubs will progress through to Round 8.

Teams nominated in the preliminary rounds in the South West Queensland Zone are Kingaroy Senior FC, Warwick Wolves, Gatton Redbacks, Willowburn FC, USQ FC, St Albans, South Toowoomba Hawks and West Wanderers.

Matches have been scheduled as follows:

  • March 7, 5:00pm: Willowburn 6 defeated Gatton 1 at Gatton
  • March 14, 5:00pm: Warwick v Kingaroy at Clive Berghofer Stadium, Toowoomba
  • March 14, 5:00pm: South Toowoomba Hawks v West Wanderers at Clive Berghofer Stadium
  • March 15, 2:00pm: St Albans v USQ FC at Toara Park, Toowoomba

The Kingaroy team is training hard for next weekend’s Round 1 clash with Warwick.

Despite the unavailability of a couple of key players, they should turn out a very competitive side.

Warwick Wolves were Football Stanthorpe Premiers last season and previously played in the Toowoomba Premier League.

No matter what the result is, it will be a great experience for the lads, and I’ll keep you up to date with squad names and results.

Next week I’ll be previewing the 2015 Evolution Solar South Burnett Football League and bring you a wrap of Kingaroy’s FFA Cup match.
