Toowoomba Regional Council’s school-based immunisation clinic will be visiting Yarraman State School this month.
Environmental Health portfolio leader Cr Sue Englart said it was important for parents to complete and return consent forms to the school if they wanted their children to be immunised.
Queensland Health, through its Queensland School Immunisation Program, provides vaccines which Council administers to students for free.
The vaccination schedule is:
- Year 8: Human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine (for girls and boys), diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough (pertussis) and chickenpox.
- Year 10: Diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough (pertussis).
“Qualified nurses assess students before administering the vaccines and also monitor students afterwards. Students then receive an immunisation record to keep,” Cr Englart said.
“It is important for parents to seriously consider having children immunised as it helps reduce the spread of these preventable diseases.
“Health authorities are worried about the rising number of objectors. The increase in whooping cough cases in recent years is an example of lax attitudes to vaccination.”
Students who miss the school clinics can have catch-up vaccinations by contacting Council on 13-18-72.
