I was very saddened to hear of the recent passing of Jim Lenihan from Lenihan’s Butchery in Kumbia.
My last memory of Jim was during a visit to the butcher shop during the election.
I had stopped in with my daughter and when he heard we were on our way to Jandowae, he proudly announced that one cheerio would certainly not be enough for our trip.
He handed over a whole bag, which my daughter gladly ate for the rest of the way.
This is such a loss for the Kumbia community and I wanted to share some of the comments from my Facebook page in relation to Jim:
- Such a sad loss, I still have the memories of going into the butcher shop to collect meat as a kid and Jim would give me a handful of cheerios! Such a lovely man. R.I.P Jim
- Very, very sad, Sadly missed R.I.P Jim Lenihan still in shock…
- Absolute legend. Very sad news, never forget the free cheerios for the kids
- Heard the sad news at John Andress’s funeral today. Two local legends that can’t be replaced
- Our deepest sympathies to the Lenihan families
- RIP, Jim, thanks you for the memories
- He was such a lovely man and he will be greatly missed
From the News Desk: A Requiem Mass for Jim will be held on Friday (March 6) at 2:30pm at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Kingaroy.

Shadow Ministry Appointment
With the election result determined, I’m now back into full swing and out and about in the Nanango Electorate.
I was also humbled to recently be appointed in the role as Shadow Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.
This is an excellent fit with the Nanango Electorate and gives me the opportunity to really focus on our primary producers.
I have always placed an extremely high priority on the agriculture sector and my pledge is to continue this while in opposition.
I would encourage local producers and industry groups to make contact with my office to highlight issues which need representation.
One of my first priorities since receiving the appointment has been to follow the impact of Cyclone Marcia on our neighbours to the north.
I’ll be travelling through the Banana Shire and North and Central Burnett region this Thursday to help assure the region’s producers they have my support.
I’ve also visited Longreach to meet with farmers still experiencing drought, and then travelled over to Townsville, Ayr and Bowen to meet with commercial fishermen, horticulture producers and canegrowers.

Back to Parliament
Parliament will also recommence soon, with the first 2015 sitting scheduled for March 24-26.
While being in Parliament does take me away from the Electorate, it is also an extremely important part of my role which allows me to focus on my constituents and issues of importance to our region.
In fact, during my first term, I was able to make 95 speeches to parliament, most of them about our amazing community groups, individuals and local businesses working hard for our area.
These speeches are always available on the Queensland Parliament website or on my own website at www.debfrecklington.com.au.
