SES volunteers attended a training course at the weekend to equip them in the use of chainsaws – a very necessary skill as demonstrated by Tropical Cyclone Marcia,
These volunteers will boost the number of qualified operators to support local emergency needs as well as provide a back-up to those members who have been deployed to assist with cleaning up the devastation up north.
Members came from Murgon, Kingaroy, Imbil, Burrum Heads and Maroochydore, with expert trainers from Cooroy, Gympie, Nambour, Murgon and Nanango.
Training consisted of theory, safety, technical matters relating to timber, cuts and techniques, safe working practices as well as chainsaw maintenance, chain sharpening and equipment maintenance. Considerable time was devoted to practical activities where all members were able to practice their new skills.
Chainsaw qualification and competence is one of many skills that SES volunteers can attain and put to good use assisting their communities and others in times of emergency and disasters.
