Clean Up Australia Day will be held on March 1

February 18, 2015

Would you like to help clean up your part of the South Burnett?

The South Burnett Regional Council is calling for interest from the community to participate in Clean Up Australia Day on March 1.

Every year Council has hosted Clean Up Australia Day events in our region with the participation numbers fluctuating significantly.

This year it is trialling a new approach.

“Council is calling for expressions of interest where community members registering are asked to state a locality in the region where they would like to participate on the day,” parks portfolio holder Cr Kathy Duff said.

“Council would like to encourage groups of people to get together and make a fun day of it.”

Council will be co-ordinating activities in towns or locations where there is interest from the community to participate in a clean-up activity.

To register interest, phone Council on (07) 4189-9100 before February 25.

Council will begin reconstruction work in Venman Street, Kingaroy, tomorrow (February 19).

The project will include the replacement of kerbs and channelling and the existing road surface for the full length of the street.

“It is expected that the work will take approximately six weeks,” roads portfolio holder Cr Damien Tessmann said.

“During the construction, there will be restricted vehicle access between 6:30am and 4:00pm to minimise the risk associated with the works.

Council has contacted local residents in regard to access via a letterbox drop.

“I would like to ensure the community that emergency services such as fire, ambulance and police will have priority access at all times should that be required,” Cr Tessmann said.

Local residents who may have regular visits from health services, Meals on Wheels or similar will be able to arrange access by contacting the onsite Supervisor or Customer Service.

During concrete works, individual private access restriction may occur overnight but prior notice will be given to the affected property owner. Residents with concerns should contact the site supervisor.

There will be changed traffic conditions at the Venman, Youngman and Albert street intersections and speed limits will be reduced during work hours.

Signs will be in place and at times Traffic Controllers will also be employed.

Council has encouraged road users to avoid the area if possible.

Council has begun design work for a significant road works and drainage project in Blackbutt.

The project will involve the construction of a stormwater drainage system traversing both sides of Coulson Street as well as an extra stormwater system interconnecting the street network of Hart, John, George, Sutton and Margaret streets.

“A series of roadwork projects are also proposed to complement the underground works,” Mayor Wayne Kratzmann said.

“Council has committed an allocation in the current year’s Budget towards the Blackbutt Town Development.

“It is also proposed to undertake a similar amount of works under next financial year’s program to complement the current proposal.”

Work is expected to start in the 2015-16 financial year.

“Blackbutt will have a greater level of drainage immunity and road capacity as a result of the works being undertaken,” Cr Damien Tessmann said.

“The Coulson Street works will provide a greater level of service to the road users who park adjacent to the kerb and increase access to the businesses within Blackbutt.”

Council has begun its systematic inspection program of Trade Waste Facilities in the region.

“This inspection program is to assist and identify properties within Kingaroy, Nanango, Blackbutt, Wondai, Murgon and Proston that are connected to Council’s reticulated sewerage system and to ensure that these facilities are kept up to a standard that is required by legislation,” MAyor Wayne Kratzmann said.

The inspections are being carried out by Council’s authorised plumbing inspectors, from February 16 to May 8 from 6:00am to 6:00pm on week days.

“By inspecting properties within our region, Council is ensuring that these facilities remain safe, reliable, and effective and are not putting a strain on our sewerage systems,” Cr Barry Green said.

A copy of the approved inspection program is available for viewing at the South Burnett Regional Council office in Kingaroy.

Council is seeking tenders for the construction of the new facilities at the Murgon Aquatic Centre.

“Council is encouraging local businesses to obtain a copy of the tender documents from our Council website,” Mayor Wayne Kratzmann said.

“This is a great opportunity for local businesses to get involved in this significant regional project.”

The new facilities will include a kiosk and amenities building.

Council is also calling for tenders for the construction of the new concourse around the pools as well as hard and soft landscaping.

“When local businesses submit the tender documents they should be clearly marked as per the instructions included in the information pack,” property portfolio holder Cr Debra Palmer said.

“Council will be assessing the submitted tender documents as soon as possible after March 6 to ensure that this project progresses within the required timeframe for the funding and is available to the community for use as soon as possible.”

An information pack including tender documents, plans and drawings are available to download from Council’s website.

Tender documents must be lodged before 4:00pm on March 6 in the Tender Box at Council’s Customer Contact Centre, Glendon Street, Kingaroy.
