A group of keen women are ready to take on one of the last bastions of male pride in the South Burnett … Australian Rules football.
The South Burnett Saints are planning to field their first all-women’s team in the 2015 competition and already have strong interest from would-be players.
The women have begun training under the watchful eye of the captain of the men’s team, Adam Bowater.
Club president Daniel Clacy said although there was a special focus on the women this year, the other divisions hadn’t been forgotten.
The senior men’s team will again be playing in the Darling Downs Division 2 competition and hope to go one better than last year when they were beaten in the Grand Final by the University Cougars.
However, there will be three more teams in this year’s competition which could mean more competition for the South Burnett side.
The Saints enjoyed a massive 2014 season, including nine straight victories, and have an added incentive to do well this year.
“Captain Adam Bowater was going to hang up his boots at the end of last year, but has decided to play one more season as he wants to get the big cup,” Daniel said.
The Saints began training before Christmas to make sure they get off to a dynamic start in the 2015 competition.
In the juniors, the Saints hope to field U12s, U14s and U16s teams as well as organising a local competition for smaller children.
The club held a sign-on day on Saturday at Lyle Vidler Oval, their home ground.
