Former Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney

February 2, 2015

Member for Callide Jeff Seeney announced this morning that he has stood down as Deputy Leader of the LNP in the wake of Saturday’s election.

And Mr Seeney told reporters he would not put up his hand to replace Campbell Newman as party leader.

He told AAP there would be a party room meeting at 10:30am tomorrow (Tuesday) to vote for a new leader and deputy leader.

“I will not be accepting nomination for any of those positions because I think it is important that no matter what the outcome of the counting that’s going on over the next couple of days, there is a new leadership team in place to take the LNP forward,” he told reporters.

He said he did not believe the LNP or Labor would be able to govern in their own right and a fresh leadership team would help the LNP negotiate with the minor parties.

Speaker Fiona Simpson has already indicated she is interested in the LNP leader’s job, while there has been ongoing speculation that outgoing Treasurer Tim Nicholls and Health Minister Lawrence Springborg may run as a ticket.

UPDATE 12:30pm: southburnett.com.au understands tomorrow’s 10:30am party room meeting has been postponed.
