If a child gets a head start in learning before school it usually sets them up for a terrific life … that’s why the staff at the Gundoo Day Care in Cherbourg have been brainstorming ideas on how to make their services even better.

Everyone from cooks to gardeners, teachers and directors gathered around earlier this month to put their ideas down on paper.

People were encouraged to speak about their vision for the centre and how they could make that become a reality over the next five years.

Suggestions that came forward included how to:

  • Increase enrolments;
  • Have more involvement from parents and the community;
  • Improve nutrition;
  • Provide better teaching in reading, writing and language;
  • Increase early childhood development activities; and
  • Ensure national standards were maintained and exceeded.

“We were giving our staff ownership of the centre’s vision and responsibility to make that become a reality,” Gundoo director Jacqui Tapau said.

Gundoo  caters for children aged from six weeks to six years.
