The RSPCA received almost 300 complaints of animal cruelty from throughout the South Burnett region over the past 12 months.

Figures released yesterday by the organisation show that 297 complaints were lodged in the area from Bells Bridge to Benarkin, including 70 in Kingaroy and 51 in Nanango.

Across Queensland, the total number of animal cruelty complaints is 18,334 – up from 12,500 five years ago, however the rise could be attributed to more people being willing to report incidents.

RSPCA spokesman Michael Beatty said the majority of cases did not result in court action, with the owners being directed to take their animal to a vet.
