South Burnett Mayor Wayne Kratzmann is encouraging residents to buy locally wherever possible this Christmas.
“Local retailers who work hard to get products on their shelves need our support,” the Mayor said.
“Council is putting out the challenge to consider buying from our local businesses first.
“If it is available in our region, please shop locally before heading outside the area.”
Queensland small businesses represent approximately 96 per cent of all businesses in the state.
They employ more than one million Queenslanders and span every industry sector.
“In the South Burnett region, we have more than 3100 local businesses opening their doors to offer goods and services to the community, and they employ more than 12,000 people,” the Mayor said,
“It is important to support local jobs, which in turn supports our local community.”
The Mayor said Council was doing its part by having a preferential buying policy which favoured suppliers within the region.
The policy, introduced in December 2012, gives local businesses who have listed themselves on the Council’s preferred suppliers database a price preference of up to 10 per cent against firms located outside the South Burnett.
