Cherbourg’s Heather Sandow is among the latest successful applicants under the Federal Government’s Local Sporting Champions program.

Federal Member for Wide Bay, Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss said today the program was designed to assist young sportsmen, women and teams to compete in significant competitions, such as State and national championships.

Grants of $500 per individual were available for people aged between 12 and 18 to meet the costs of participating in those events, including travel, equipment, uniforms, and accommodation.

Heather has been given her grant to take part in the Queensland Girls Rugby League Carnival.

She is one of nine successful athletes to receive assistance in the Wide Bay electorate.

“It is pleasing to see so many talented young sporting men and women in our region,” Mr Truss said.

Applications for grants can be made at any time, either through the Australian Sports Commission or by contacting Mr Truss’ office on 1300-301-968.
