Wondai will stage its first ever outdoor movie night in Coronation Park next Thursday, November 13 … and it’s all in a good cause.
The gold coin donation event has been organised by the Charlotte The Emu Memorial Committee.
It’s the latest fundraiser for a public appeal the group are running to build a permanent memorial to Wondai’s much-loved town emu, which was run over in May this year.
The movie night will begin at 6:00pm and will screen the popular Australian film “Red Dog”.
There’ll also be hot chips, ice creams and soft drinks available on site.
And afterwards the Wondai Hotel and Cellar will be offering post-screening coffee and cake as well as a limited supply of $5 per can Emu Bitter, the famous Western Australian lager which owner Michael Beohm has ordered specially for the occasion.
All proceeds from Emu Bitter sales will also be donated to the appeal.
Committee chairman Chris “Corky” Corcoran, from CROW-FM 90.7, said the aim of the movie night was to offer something that was affordable for families, as well as keep residents updated on the progress of fund-raising efforts.
“At the moment we have collection tins for the Charlotte Memorial Appeal at businesses in Wondai, Murgon and Kingaroy. And in December we’ll be holding a radiothon on CROW with some really great items on offer,” he said.
“We’re confident we’ll make our $10,000 target by Christmas, and the Movie Night will let us update everyone as well as give the community a great night out.”
Station announcer Shaz Birkett is also running a public appeal through the station’s Facebook page for photos residents may have taken of Charlotte the Emu so she can prepare a slideshow that will be run before the movie begins screening.
The movie night has been jointly sponsored by IGA Wondai, the Wondai Hotel and Cellar, Wondai Mechanical, Hobbs and Associates and Datawave, who are paying the movie hiring fee.
Screening will be carried out by Michael Eadie, the former manager of the South Burnett PCYC in Murgon, who will be travelling up from Brisbane for the evening and bringing along a giant inflatable movie screen and projection equipment.
“We’ve been floored by the support we’ve received for this event, which is a first for the town,” Corky said.
“Providing the weather stays fine, it should be a really great family night out under the stars and we encourage everyone to come along.
“However – in the unlikely event it rains – we’ll postpone it to the following week rather than relocate it indoors.
“An outdoor movie night is an experience in its own right, and it’s one we’d like the community to have.”
