November 29, 2014

A number of clubs have received some rain in the past few weeks, though nothing to compare with the weather in Brisbane and the coast. And perhaps that’s a good thing in some ways.
I know that Yarraman received about an inch this week, but a regular delivery from Jupiter Pluvius is what’s really required at this time of the year.
Some of our region’s other clubs haven’t been so fortunate, but they’ve have been doing an amazing job nonetheless, considering the circumstances.
Many of the clubs I’ve spoken to plan top dressing and maintenance over the Christmas and New Year holidays.
I’m sure many of their hard-working volunteers will be looking forward to a break!
Anyway, Kilcoy leads our bulletin this week:

Kingaroy News
It was a big weekend in Kingaroy last Saturday and Sunday: the club played off their Mixed Fours Championship over the two days.
The Mixed Fours was the club’s final championship event for 2014.
There were eight teams in the competition and the format was a little different this year, but the new style received the thumbs up from the competitors.
Previously, two men and two ladies formed a team.
But this year a team comprised any combination, as long as one member was of the opposite sex.
Although the weather was still hot, a breeze assisted in keeping the teams comfortable and the competition was very keen. The results:
Round One:
- Maureen Kemp, Rhonda Costello, Glen Turner and Phil Kemp def. Bob Bougoure, Maureen Semgreen, Dave Barwick and Col Kratzmann 23-15
- Val Jeppesen, Beryl Woods, Wendy Turner and Bruce Johnston def. Peter Neilsen, Maree Millard, Paul Marychurch and Bob Robinson 22-13
- Errol Young, Delwyn Powys, Lester Newman and Mark Williams def. Marj Moore, Glady Slatter, Alex Callander and Kev Raffin 33-8
- Sharon Yeates, Wayne Thatcher, Bronwyn Grant and Malcolm MacLeod def. Lindy Clutterbuck, Wanda Carland, Geoff Clutterbuck and Steve Carland 27-17
Semi-Final:
- Errol Young, Delwyn Powys, Lester Newman and Mark Williams def. Sharon Yeates, Wayne Thatcher, Bronwyn Grant and Malcolm MacLeod 20-11
- Maureen Kemp, Rhonda Costello, Glen Turner and Phil Kemp def. Val Jeppesen, Beryl Woods, Wendy Turner and Bruce Johnston 21-10
The Final was always going to be a close and hard fought game, considering the quality of the players participating.
Team Kemp won the opening end, but after 8 ends they trailed Team Williams 6 shots to 5.
But a fierce contest continued with Team Kemp battling to a 17-10 lead by end 15.
However the Williams team would not give up and closed the gap to 17-15 before Team Kemp ultimately ran out winners after 21 ends, 21-17

Proston News
Eight teams competed in the annual Bottle Tree Carnival at Proston last Saturday.
Teams came from as far as Roma and Binjour, as well as the local clubs, and they saw a new concept: sectional play of 12 ends over the three games played.
A good day was enjoyed by all despite stifling heat.
The green was in good order, too, and this was remarkable considering the number of volunteers in the small club and the horrific drought conditions currently gripping the area. The results:
Group 1:
- Alwyn Litzow’s team from Wondai – 35 points
- Andy Cochrane’s team from Roma – 25 points
- Terry Kilford’s team from Wondai – 22 points
- Graham Blanch’s team from Proston – 14 points
Group 2:
- John Gleich’s team from Proston – 30 points
- Ray Frahm’s team from Murgon – 29 points
- Gary Taylor’s team from Binjour – 24 points
- Morrie Young’s team from Durong – 13 points
The three end knockout of Alwyn Litzow’s team against John Gleich’s team was enjoyed by the enthusiastic spectators.
In the end, John Gleich’s team won 2 ends to Alwyn Litzow’s team 1 end.
