A big crowd turned out to Wondai’s Coronation Park on Saturday morning for the official opening of the town’s “Village Green” project by South Burnett Mayor Wayne Kratzmann.

Mayor Kratzmann said the first stage had been built in three phases and incorporated many ideas which had come directly from Wondai residents themselves during extensive community consultations.

He said the Village Green would continue to be developed and extended in future as funds became available.

The next most likely improvements would come when the proposed Kingaroy-Kilkivan Rail Trail passed through the town.

Council staff have been working on the Rail Trail since July when the State Government announced it would be making $2 million available for the project.

The mayor said first draft plans would be sent to Brisbane soon for State Government inspection.

“The good news in all of this is that when it’s built, Wondai will be a hub for the Rail Trail,” the Mayor said.

Once the Rail Trail went ahead, Council intended to upgrade the former Wondai Railway Station building and other parts of the Village Green to take advantage of the expected increase in tourist numbers.

The Mayor also announced that from Monday, the Council would be relocating its Community and Events Department from its Glendon Street headquarters to the former Wondai Shire Council offices in Mackenzie Street.

The move would expand staff numbers in the building “to between 8 and 10”.

This would provide a small economic boost to the town and make better use of the building, he said.

The announcement mirrored a similar decision last month to relocate the Council’s Natural Resources Department to the former Murgon Shire Council Chambers, which drew immediate praise from the Murgon Business and Development Association.

The Mayor’s address was followed by a tree-planting ceremony conducted by himself, Cr Ros Heit and Council’s Natural Resources and Parks manager Greg Griffiths.

Mr Griffiths drew up the plans for the Village Green project and is overseeing its development.

Audience members were treated to entertainment provided by several choirs, Wondai State School students, the Wondai and District Band and the Stolzenberg Brothers.

The monthly Wondai Markets, which were operating in the park all morning, also enjoyed a bumper turnout.
