The week’s heat wave played havoc with all the bowls clubs in the area.

Yarraman called off a whole weekend of trophy play: their triples clash with Nanango last Saturday and the “Shirts and Skirts” fun day planned for last Sunday.

But an energetic watering roster by the Greens Director and 15 mls of rain on Wednesday should make for a great weekend of bowling for their Rosalie Fours tournament next weekend. Entries have been closed for some months.

Anyway, Wondai heads the bulletin this week…

Yarraman News

Yarraman is closing the gap on matches still to be played on their championship calendar.

The weather, medical appointments and social engagements delayed the finish of some sections of the honour roll.

On Thursday, in a late afternoon start to avoid some of the heat wave, the semi-final of the Mixed Triples was finished under lights.

The gallery didn’t know which side to support, but they applauded every good bowl.

Robbie Douglass’ team of Di Currell and Neil Currell got away to a good start against Lorri Holmes, Kerry Knowles and Bill Holmes.

They led 6-1 after six ends.

Then Bill cracked the whip and his own team were leading 13-12 after thirteen ends.

From there on there were only single score wins on each end as they jockeyed up the scoreboard.

After 21 ends the score was 18-all, so an extra end was called.

Douglass’ first bowl virtually clinched the match.

He placed it beside the kitty and with two earlier bowls by his team, made a tight cordon around it.

Three for the end it was game over: 21-18 to Douglass, Currell and Currell.

The other semi-final still to be played.

Kingaroy News

Last Saturday Kingaroy held the Macleod/Yeates Trophy Day sponsored by members Sharon and Glen Yeates and Charmaine and Malcolm MacLeod.

Conditions of play were determined by the sponsors.

They comprised two 14-end games with the winners being decided by the number of games won and the number of ends won.

Thirty players took to the greens in hot and breezy conditions. The winds were unpredictable and at times almost unplayable.

However the games were completed without any untoward problems.

Results:

  • Winners: Evelyn Taylor, Maureen Semgreen and Ray Maclaren – 2 wins plus 21 ends
  • Runners Up: Wanda Carland, Charmaine MacLeod and Glen Yeates – 2 wins plus 18 ends
  • Third: Wayne Thatcher, Geoff Clutterbuck, Phil Kemp – 2 wins plus 16 ends

On Wednesday oppressive weather conditions curtailed the number of players on the traditional Ladies Day for bowls, with temperatures exceeding 340<//sup> celsius.

Results:

  • Maureen Kemp, Col Kratsmann and Gladys Slatter def. Marj Moore, Sharon Yeates and Charmaine MacLeod 23-21
  • Des Richards, June Olsson and Val Jeppesen 20 def. Norma Rook, Ray Maclaren and Beryl Woods 20-14

Thursday’s Trophy Day, though, was quite a difference. 62mm of rain overnight completely changed the playing conditions for the monthly Trophy Day.

The greens were noticeably slower than in recent weeks and it took bowlers a little bit of time to adjust.

Conditions of play to determine the winners were the closest winning margin and – surprise!! surprise!!! – these conditions were only revealed at the end of the day’s play.

  • Winners: Peter Neilsen, Paul Marychurch and Ray Maclaren. – Margin +2
  • Runners Up: Harry Read, Bob Bougoure and Hugh Harrison – Margin +6

Results:

  • Peter Neilsen, Paul Marychurch and Ray Maclaren def. Fred Keding, Maureen Semgreen and Steve Carland 24-22
  • Harry Read, Bob Bougoure and Hugh Harrison def. Des Richards, Ross Olsson and Ben Pratap 20-14
  • Felipe Munoz, Geoff Clutterbuck and Col Kratzmann def. Darcy Munro, Maree Millard and Kev Raffin 21-13
  • Dave Barwick, Barry O’Brien and Bruce Johnston def. Marj Moore, Dave Clapperton and Bob Robinson 23-12
