Being kept busy at the Murgon Post Office today were Lorraine Taylor, owner Wendy Mobbs, Sarah Jensen and Gina Gleich

November 14, 2014

Murgon Post Office celebrated 100 years of serving the local community with a special morning tea celebration on Friday morning.

Local residents crowded onto the verandah, which was festooned with balloons, and browsed through the gift shop.

Adding to the fun, CROW-FM announcers Shaz Birkett and Chris “Corky” Corcoran did live crosses from the footpath all morning,

Owner Wendy Mobbs took over the Murgon Post Office in January 2014.

The inside of the store would be barely recognisable to the postmasters of a hundred years ago, but the serious matter of postal deliveries is still co-ordinated from the building.

Wendy said contractors handled three local runs: Moffatdale / Redgate, Windera / Cloyna, and Byee / Silverleaf.

Wendy and staff member Lorraine Taylor later cut a Centenary Cake to top off celebrations.

Donna Jensen, Murgon, with Mia Ford, 11 months; and Katelyn Hazelgrove, Murgon, with Erica, 18 months, were enjoying browsing in the gift store … the box shelves behind them are actually the old sorting boxes from the early days of the post office building

Keeping true to the postal theme … former postie Noel King-Adams, from Murgon, brought along his old whistle; Noel wasn’t a postie at Murgon, but was enjoying the celebrations anyway as it was bringing back memories from 58 years ag0
