Wow! It’s been hot lately, hasn’t it? So hot, in fact, that Nanango had to call their Men’s Trophy day off on Tuesday.
Attendances were down quite a bit for mid-week play, too.
But there’s a big weekend coming up in Triples, with Nanango playing Yarraman today; and President’s Day at both Binjour and Yarraman tomorrow.
I hope to have all the results for you next Saturday.
In the meantime, here’s what else has been happening around the region in bowls this week:

Burnett District news
The Binjour ladies flew the flag quite proudly in the State Champion of Champions (Ladies Fours) at Toombul last week.
Eight Queensland Zones were represented, and the eight were divided into two sections.
The winners of each section played out each other in the final.
And what a final it was, with Yeppoon (Central Queensland Zone) defeating Ferny Grove (Brisbane Zone) 21-20.
The Burnett District was represented by Binjour, who played in Section two.
They came second in that section and fourth overall in the championship. Here are the results:
- Binjour 20 defeated Kallangur 16
- Ferny Grove 31 defeated Binjour 6
- Binjour 23 defeated Marlin Coast 15
Final standing for the six not in the final: Wins + Margins
- Broadbeach (Gold Coast) 4 pts – (12)

Yarraman news
One of the highlights of the Yarraman calendar is the annual Dudley Brown-Ashley Emmert Memorial Shield Day.
Held each year in late October, it gives players the opportunity to remember the enormous contribution that two bowlers gave to the bowls community.
Dudley Brown played an active part on the club’s management committee and was Club President when he passed away.
He lived at Blackbutt, played regularly at Yarraman and travelled extensively in his role as club president.
Many Blackbutt bowlers played in the tournament and later reflected on Dudley Brown’s life.
The Shield also reflects the enormous effect that Ashley Emmert had on the lives of the young men of those times.
Many old school pals sat around the green chatting and later enjoying a barbecue tea.
One of the many with photos and mementos of the good old days was last year’s Shield winner Brian Profke, who recalled the closeness the two friends had.
“They were inseparable … they were like brothers”.
This year the Shield was won by a team skipped by club Treasurer Kerry Knowles.
It comprised Sandra Currell, Toss Currell, Lorri Holmes and Kerry Knowles.
The competition was decided on points, not scores, and they won both of their rounds.
In Round 1 they defeated Daphne Stewart’s team 23-6. And in Round 2 they defeated last year’s winners Brian Profke team by 19-10.

Nanango news
The Men’s Rose Bowl Four’s was the big attraction last weekend.
It was sponsored by the Fitzroy Hotel, Raine & Horne Nanango and Nanango Taxi Service.
Scoring was wins plus ends and teams came from as far away as Brisbane, with Kallangur fielding two teams.
The run down was quite interesting:
- Roy Latham, Les Hedges,Alex Barsby and Arron Jones – 4w 1d +47 ends
- Murgon/Tansey: Brian Daglish, Ray Mason, Athol Jensen and John McDonald – 4w 1l +47

Scroungers last Friday week was a bottler, with Ben Pratap and Lew Saunders tied on 105.
But the Men’s Social on Tuesday was called off due to the sweltering heatwave.
On Wednesday, conditions were a little better for the Ladies Trophy Day, which was Three Bowl Pairs.
There were a couple of real nail biters here: Muriel Benfield and Glen Yeates drew with Sylvia Fanning and Lew Saunders 21-all. while Julie Saunders and Sue Tucker defeated Lynn Halliday and Athol Jensen 19-16.

Kingaroy news
Normally there’s a lot of activity at Kingaroy, but quite a number of players were away during the week supporting other tournaments and carnivals in the Burnett District.
On Thursday of last week, in Pairs and Triples:
- Peter Neilsen and Hugh Harrison def. Eric Ford and Kev Raffin 17-15
- Maree Millard, Bob Robinson and Errol Dionysius def. Craig Evans, Col Kratzmann and Bruce Johnston 32-16
- Keith Muller, Felipe Munoz and Ray Maclaren drew Col McBride, Harry Read and Greg Schulz 15-all
- Bob Bougoure, Paul Marychurch and Richie Patterson drew Fred Keding, Ben Pratap and Danny Holligan 15-all
And on Sunday in Pairs:
- Bob Bougoure and Ray Maclaren def. Gladys Slatter and Alan Irwin 22-11
- Peter Neilsen and Dave Barwick def. Des Richards and Wendy Turner 14-13

Kilcoy news
The Men’s Two Day Carnival last week-end attracted a great field.
The results were as follows:
- Winners: Mark Brown, Jack Horne, Paul West and Peter Stanton
- Runners Up: B Pothery, Stumpy Gough, D. Klegler and B, Ryan
- 3rd: Alan Thorp, Kerry Smith, Andre Legosz and Danny Mitchell
- 4th: Peter Harris, John Glanville, Greg Staniforth and Graham Chant
- 5th: B. Gough, S. Kelly, A. Bechly and T, Jenner
The Sportsman Award went to the Dayboro team.

What’s On The Blackboards
- Tuesday – Melbourne Cup Day at Yarraman and no doubt Melbourne Cup features on most club programs
- Wednesday – Ladies Bowls at a number of clubs, with a 9:00am start at Yarraman
- Thursday – Pub Day at Yarraman. This will be Nominated Fours with two games of twelve ends, 6 points per win and 2 points per end, with prizes for Round 1, Round 2, and overall with conditions a team can only win one prize
- Sunday 9th – Jackpot Pairs at Yarraman
- Sunday 9th – Biggenden Men’s Fours
