Last night’s storms didn’t bring much rain to the South Burnett but caused headaches for firefighters in the local region.

Lightning strikes were blamed for four grass fires – at Kumbia, Chahpingah, Goodger and Cushnie.

Last night, firefighters were called out to Mp Creek Road at Cushnie to extinguish a fire sparked by a lightning strike to a tree.

About 10:30am this morning, the Sunshine Coast strike team – currently based in Kingaroy – joined Stuart River Rural brigade and urban units to tackle a grass fire near the intersection of the Bunya Highway and Ironpot Road.

About 10 minutes later, another grass fire was reported on Ironpot Road, this time at Chahpingah.

The two water bombers on standby at Kingaroy Airport assisted with this fire, which was controlled on the ground by rural firies from three brigades plus members from the strike team.

This was the third fire near Ironpot Road in less than 24 hours, with firefighters being called out to the area on Monday evening in another fire probably linked to the storm.

Four rural brigades were also called to a scrub fire on Old Taabinga Road at Goodger.
