The annual Aussie Backyard Bird Count is happening this week – and this year, it’s happening through a free mobile app for Androids and Iphones

October 21, 2014

Have you got a spare 20 minutes? Then how about spending it counting the birds … yes, birds … around you?

The Aussie Backyard Bird Count is currently taking place and has just five days left to run.

The idea is for residents to identify and count birds over a set time period to provide a snapshot of what’s happening in their local area.

Birds can be counted in a park, backyard, National Park … anywhere.

And they can be counted at any time of the day and night.

The Aussie Backyard Bird Count is being organised by BirdLife Australia, an independent bird conservation group, and is being billed as one of Australia’s largest “citizen scientist” projects.

More than 7900 checklists have already been submitted to the group and they hope to get thousands more over the next few days.

To make it easier, BirdLife Australia has developed a free phone app – which can be downloaded from either Google Play (Android) or the Apple App Store (iPhone).

The app includes a built-in field guide to help identify the birds spotted.
