Attendance numbers at the recent BP Dam Inland Family Fishing Classic were down slightly this year – and no tagged fish were caught – but organisers are happy with the outcome.

A total of 284 fish were caught over the two days of the competition by 262 competitors.

Eighty-nine fish were weighed in at the first session; 106 fish in the second session; and 88 in the third session.

Most were Yellowbellies (172) but there were also some Bass (71) and Jewfish (40) caught, along with a single Silver Perch.

The biggest single catch was a 3.225kg Yellowbelly, which was landed by Murgon fisherman Craig Taylor.

The winning competitors this year were:

Seniors:

  • Yellowbelly: Craig Taylor from Murgon – 3.255kg
  • Bass: David Wykes from Yengarie – 1.165kg
  • Silver Perch: Kevin Stubbings from Ballina – 1.27kg
  • Jew Fish: Andrew Campbell from Springfield Lakes – 1.79kg

Juniors:

  • Yellowbelly: Lucas Townsend from Dalby – 2.755kg
  • Bass: Lucas Townsend – 0.795kg
  • Jew Fish: Daryll Bridges – 1.295kg

No juniors weighed in any Silver Perch, so the prize for this section went into a lucky draw which was won by a junior.

Leo Geraghty, from the Murgon Business and Development Association, this week congratulated the Association and its many helpers – including the Goomeri Lions and the Barambah soccer club, who provided on-site catering over the weekend – for their efforts in mounting the event.

“We’ve had reports from several local shopkeepers that they had quite a good weekend because of the Family Fishing Classic,” he said.
