The long weekend became a short weekend for the Kingaroy Mixed Fours Carnival.

There was so much going on in the usual catchment area for tournament players that the Kingaroy management elected to reduce the two day Mixed Fours Carnival to a one day event.

Twelve teams competed on Sunday, with visitors coming as far afield as Rockhampton, Bundaberg, Toowoomba, North Dalby and Crows Nest.

There were three games of 18 ends, with the winners being determined by the number of games won and ends won.

It’s indicative of the fierceness of the competition that only one team won three ends, so it was easy to pick a winner. Runners-up trophies went to a countback.

In addition to the usual placegetters’ prize money, monetary prizes were given to individual game winners.

This new idea was well-received by all players.

  • Winners: Kingaroy/Bundaberg (Betty Cullen, Danny Holligan, Errol Dionysius, Noel Cullen) – 3 wins
  • Runners Up: North Dalby (Wendy Usher, Sally Kelly, Gordon Usher, Tom Kelly) – 2 wins plus an end on countback.
  • Third: Kingaroy/Gayndah (Lester Newman, Aymee Bellert, Warwick Bellert, Mark Williams) – 2 wins

On Thursday, club triples was played with randomly selected teams, and the winners were determined by the highest winning score.

  • Winners: Col McBride, Lyle Dascombe and Bruce Johnston – High Score 25
  • Runners Up: Steve Carland, Felipe Munoz and Ray Crawford – High Score 24

Results:

  • Col McBride, Lyle Dascombe and Bruce Johnston def. Des Richards, John Muller and Ross Olsson 25-16
  • Steve Carland, Felipe Munoz and Ray Crawford def. Darcy Munro, Geoff Clutterbuck and Beryl Woods 24-18
  • Bob Bougoure, Ben Pratap and Richie Patterson def. Dave Woods, Hugh Harrison and Errol Dionysius 20-13
  • Barry O’Brien, Merv Anderson and Col Kratzmann def. Keith Muller, Peter Neilsen and John Coppard 20-13

Nanango news

The monthly interclub triples clash between Nanango and Yarraman dominates the Nanango news this week.

Nanango hosted this self-selected competition with scoring of two for an end and five for each match win.

Eunice Smith and Henry Bleisner topped the scoreboard with 44 pts, while the Pogson Team (of Pogson, Pogson and Pogson) were next best on 37.5 pts.

A run-down of the scoreboard is interesting – there was quite a contingent from Yarraman:

  • Doreen Fitch, Daphne Stewart and Merv Fitch – 34 pts
  • Bev Profke, Kev Profke and Helene Johnson – 31.5 pts
  • John McConnell, Lew Saunders and Maurice Dawes – 31 pts
  • Glenda Wolski, George Wolski and Brian Dugdell – 31 pts
  • Bob Hammond, Ben Pratap and Allan Ward – 29 pts
  • Di Currell, Neil Currell and Neil Johnson – 20 pts
  • Lynn Halliday, Sue Tucker and Brian Havell – 18 pts
  • John Beattie and Evelyn Jensen – 14 pts

In the Championship Triples Semi-Final, Ben Pratap, Brian Havell and Glen Yeates defeated Lew Saunders, Cec Bracken and John McConnell 23-14.

On Tuesday, the Yeates team went on to the Final against the champions for the past two years – Bob Hammond, Athol Jensen and Jim Fowler.

After five ends, Team Yeates lead 9 shots to 5. But by the 12th end Team Fowler lead 13 to 12.

Team Fowler then put their foot down and ran away comfortable winners 26 to 16.

This gave Athol Jensen four Triples crowns since joining the club

On Tuesday in the Men’s Social, conditions of play were four for win and one for each end won:

  • Joe Aglizzio, Mike Wyvill and Bob Hall – 27 pts
  • Kevin Kleinhanns, Henry Bliesner and Allan Ward – 19 pts
  • Lew Saunders and Maurice Dawes – 19 pts
  • Trevor George, Ed Haycock and Cec Bracken – 15 pts

And on Wednesday in the Ladies Social, a game of interest was Di McNeilage and Kerry Little’s defeat of Edith White, June McKee and Evelyn Jensen 20-15.

Meanwhile, last Friday’s popular Scroungers saw Ben Pratap top the leader board with 44 pts. Trevor George was next best with 35 pts.

Scroungers the previous Friday was interesting, too.

Members of a caravan club in town for the week joined in the fun and turned out some good scores.

First names only:

  • Les – 81 pts
  • Ben – 71 pts
  • Jerry – 56 pts
  • Trevor – 51 pts
  • Ken – 51 pts
  • Ray-2 – 42 pts
  • Ray- 1 – 35 pts
  • John – 33 pts
  • Graham – 32 pts
  • Lew – 30 pts

On Ladies Trophy Day:

  • June McKee and Evelyn Jensen def. Muriel Benfield and Sue Tucker 20-14
  • Noel Little, Kerry Little and Lew Saunders def. Lynn Halliday and Allan Ward 18-16

Finally, there are a couple of very interesting tournaments coming up in a couple of weeks:

  • Tuesday 21st: Ladies Rose Bowl
  • Saturday and Sunday 25-26: Men’s Rose Bowl.

Yarraman news

Yarraman are getting close to the end of their Club Championships and the Final of the Men’s Championship pair was a real thriller, with Merv Fitch and Brian Profke defeating Brian Dugdell and George Wolski 26-25 after playing an extra end.

Merv and Brian were down 15-1 and fought back to be 17-all by the 16th end.

The game was still 25-all by the 21st end, so an extra end had to be played. What a nail-biter!

In the Mixed Triples, Rob Douglass, Neil Currell and Di Currell def. Helene Johnson, Kev Profke and Bev Profke 25-13. A semi-final still has to be played.

On Wednesday in the Ladies Club social:

  • Leo Robinson and Margaret Willoughby def. Di Currell and Martha 15-10
  • Ivy Wrembeck and Alison Anderson def. Lorrie Holmes and Eunice Smith 18-11

Yarraman club members are great wanderers and normally support neighbouring events. So on Thursday Helene Johnson, Daphne Stewart, Bev Profke and Eunice Smith travelled to Wondai for Hazel Keding’s President Day.

Bev Profke skipped the runner-up team of Pat Templeman (Mundubbera) and Evelyn Taylor (Kingaroy).

We don’t know whether it is the Spring weather or the Providore’s sausage sizzle, but Thursday night is becoming quite a social affair.

There was one round of triples last week, and the winners were Kerry Knowles, Tom Clarke and Arthur Smith.

They defeated Lorri Holmes, Eunice Smith and Kerry Walsh 22-4.

Runners-up were Todd Currell, Alison Anderson and Kenny Walsh who defeated Neil Johnston, Margaret Willoughby and Marg Clarke 22-10.

An official Burnett District Ladies team is expected to head the list of visitors for Yarraman Ladies 50 Year Centenary on Tuesday.

Yarraman Blackboard:

  • Jackpot Pairs tomorrow
  • Ladies Club 50 years centenary on Tuesday
  • Oct 19: Rotational Triples versus Nanango at Yarraman
  • Oct 25: Dudley Brown /Ashley Emmert Memorial Trophy
  • November 2: President at Home
