Year 11 student Richelle Bethke has been crowned Nanango’s Mardi Gras Princess for 2014 at a special celebration on Wednesday night.

Richelle competed against two other local women, Thea Applebee and Megan Abee, for the prestigious role.

Each was asked to give a small talk in front of a crowd of local residents gathered at the Copper Country Restaurant in Nanango.

The crowd then voted for the winner in a secret ballot.

Funfest Committee president Barry Green said the voting had been a “photo finish”, with Richelle just edging out Thea and Megan who “deadheated” as runners-up.

Richelle, who will now play a major role in the Mardi Gras parade on Saturday evening, was sashed and crowned by Graham Archdall, from sponsors Heritage Bank.

She was also presented with $500 cash, gifts and a large bunch of flowers.

The three girls were sponsored by Pharmacy Essentials Nanango (Richelle), South Burnett Gas Guzzlers (Thea) and Nanango Newsagency (Megan).
