October 2, 2014

Mental Health Week (October 5-12) is being marked in the South Burnett with a number of activities aimed at raising awareness about mental health issues and services in the local community.

“Mental Health Week is about raising awareness and educating and equipping people with information about mental health issues and the pathways to recovery through a range of events and displays,” Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service mental health promotion officer Danielle Peres said.

“The theme this year emphasises that staying healthy means looking after yourself physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

“The connectedness that healthy relationships bring to communities helps to build great lives and helps keep people well.”

The winners of the annual South Burnett Mental Health Week art competition will announced at a special opening night at the Kingaroy Art Gallery on Friday (October 3). Entries in the competition will remain on display at the gallery until October 23.

Staff from the South Burnett Community Mental Health Service will also have an information display in the Community Mental Health building at the Kingaroy Hospital throughout Mental Health Week.

Residents are encouraged to stop by the display and talk to the local mental health professionals who will have information available on a range of mental health issues and available services.

The display is supported by the Toowoomba Hospital Foundation.
