Representatives from more than 60 community groups walked away smiling from Kingaroy Town Hall on Wednesday night, clutching cheques handed over to them by the South Burnett Regional Council.

The third annual Community Assistance Presentation Night provided an opportunity for councillors and community groups from all over the region to come together.

Cultural Services Co-ordinator Michael Hunter said the total amount contributed by the South Burnett Regional Council to local groups this year was $336,344 which included $113,500 in community grants and $222,844 in rates remissions and rate exceptions.

Mayor Wayne Kratzmann said he was proud of the fact that the Council’s Budget showed a small surplus while other governments were battling deficits.

He said to achieve that “nothing was untouchable”, and that included community grants.

“We look at them every year but my councillors have the same charter that I have, supporting our community and supporting our volunteers,” he said.

After the cheque presentations, the audience watched a presentation of “The Poppy Trail”, highlighting the visit earlier this year by South Burnett representatives to Dodewaard and the World War I battlefields of France and Belgium.
