After several months of planning, the official fundraising campaign for Wondai’s Charlotte the Emu Memorial got underway on Saturday at the monthly Wondai Markets.
CROW-FM 90.7 performed live crosses to the Markets all morning.
To kick the fundraising campaign off with a bang, the Wondai Show Society drew its raffle for the chainsaw sculpture of an emu mother and chick that was created by Maleny artist Matt George at this year’s Wondai Show.
The sculpture has been decorating the entrance foyer of the nearby Cecil Hotel since Show Day, but after the draw is now the property of raffle winner Justin Shultz, also from Wondai.
Proceeds from the raffle will be donated towards the construction of a life-size, 3D metal sculpture of the town’s much loved – and now departed – emu Charlotte.
The Memorial Committee want to erect the memorial in Coronation Park near the town’s new entrance walls, close to the Wondai roundabout, and aim to raise $10,000 to get the project built.
Award-winning Kilkivan sculptor Dan Davie has already been commissioned to build the statue, and the committee hope to have the finished work unveiled shortly before Christmas.
The fund-raising campaign is being conducted through collection tins which have been distributed to local businesses in Wondai, Murgon and Kingaroy (see further below), along with a live on-air auction that will be run on CROW-FM 90.7 next month.
Donations to the “CROW-FM Emu” account can also be left at the Bank Of Queensland’s offices in Wondai and Kingaroy.
