The Burnett Mary Regional Group has advised that there is $20,000 available for projects in each of the South and North Burnett council areas for soil conservation … but farmers had better act quickly.

The closing date for expressions of interest in the Sustainable Grazing Management and On-Ground Works program close on October 10.

The program aims to mitigate gully and hill slope erosion exacerbated by the January 2013 floods and generally reduce soil erosion.

BMRG will work with Landcare, industry and catchment groups to promote soil conservation methods as well as undertake one-on-one engagement with individual landholders.

Funds are available to provide soil conservation advice and to support on-ground works for four or more landholders in each of the two council areas to minimise erosion over 1670ha (a total of at least eight landholders).

Priority sub catchments cover Wilksdale-Durong, Monogorilby-Hawkwood, Eidsvold West, and Mt Perry.

The $20,000 can be made up of four or more projects up to $5000 in each council area, but there needs to be at least four.

The funds are available for works such as:

  • Erosion mitigation,
  • Fencing to manage cover on degraded and fragile areas,
  • Engineering works to rehabilitate gully erosion,
  • Upgrading, maintaining, establishing or removing contour bank layouts and to
  • Re-establish ground cover on degraded areas.

The funding opportunity requires a 50/50 landholder contribution in either cash or in-kind.

Participants will also be required to complete a Property Management Planning process to formalise whole farm erosion control strategies.
