The Nanango Race Club awarded an Honorary Life Membership to long-time member Kerry Mercer at its Annual General Meeting on Wednesday night.

Mr Mercer received the award for his tireless efforts as a committee member over the last 17 years, along with his work in the stable area; on the club’s current grandstand upgrade project; and his excellent record as Clerk of the Course.

Members heard that during the last year the club has upgraded the track’s stables; replaced the TV screens; and renewed the undercover seating around the grounds. An upgrade of the grandstand is also expected to be finished in time for the next meeting.

Upgrades are continually being carried out to guarantee the best facilities for racegoers, members were told.

Members also heard that in the 2013-2014 racing year there were 31 races run at the Lee Park track for a total of 306 horses.

The highlight of the club’s meetings was the Carrollee Hotel Nanango Cup, when 83 horses left the barriers in the six race programme.

The other major race during the year was the Heritage Mardi Gras Cup, run on Nanango’s Mardi Gras Festival Day.

Each year the club also recognizes trainers and jockeys with its Premiership Awards Presentation.

The awarded trainer this year was Bradley Hudson; the jockey, Brooke Ainsworth; and Colonel Sodhi won the Horse of the Year.

The club passed on its congratulations to all those who made 2013-14 another great year of racing in the South Burnett.

The Nanango Race Club has 6 race meetings a year and these are sponsored by local businesses.

The club also passed a vote of thanks to all sponsors who’d supported their efforts over the previous year, and recorded that it would like to encourage more sponsors to become involved in the year ahead.

Club membership is available by calling the secretary on (07) 4163-2346 or by emailing her.
