The AFL 2nd Division Grand Final had been tipped as a competition between the South Burnett Saints’ attacking-style football and University Cougars’ defensive tactics.

And on the day, defence won.

The Saints enjoyed a massive 2014 season – including nine straight victories – but were overwhelmed in the Grand Final played on Sunday at Toowoomba: 11.14 (80) to 4.7 (31).

Cougars kept the Saints’ key scorers,  Adam Bowater, Brad Edwards and Ty Snow, goal-less in a relatively low-scoring match.

At half-time, Cougars led 6.8 (44) to 2.2 (14).

Numerous attacking runs by the South Burnett players were repelled.

Saints’ goals were kicked by Paul Pressnell (2), Clinton Brown and Daniel Rogers.

Cougars’ goals were by Scott Sowerby (2), Ryan Hopkins (2), Simon Choice (2), Brodie Wagland, Joshua Mays, Steven McLennan, Sam Banim and Norman Dempsey.

It is University’s eighth Adrian Jericho Shield Division 2 Premiership.
