Past students and teachers of Abbeywood State School will be getting back together on Saturday at Proston to mark the centenary of the opening of the school.

The school was built in 1914 and officially closed on April 24, 1972, but it has never been forgotten by the hundreds of students who passed through its doors.

Albert Jones, one of the organisers of the reunion, said the school building still stands but is now a private residence.

He said the owners were very supportive of the celebration and would be allowing visitors to visit the property during the day.

The main centenary celebrations will be held at the Proston Community Hall with bus trips out to the school.

Morning and afternoon tea, and lunch, will be available at the hall – but for catering purposes, an RSVP has been requested.

There will also be an invitation-only dinner for past students and teachers.

Albert said 133 people had so far booked in for lunch and 86 had been confirmed for the invitation-only dinner.

“Although we have endeavoured to contact as many past students and teachers as we could find, we will have missed some,” Albert said.

“So if you have attended the school and have not received an invitation, but would like one, please contact us.”
