August 19, 2014

The latest recipients of the South Burnett Mayor’s Community Benefit Fund were presented with their cheques at a fundraising breakfast in Kingaroy this morning.

Round 2 of the fund was allocated to mental health initiatives.

Community Benefit Fund Committee chairperson Cheryl Dalton presented cheques to:

  • Kingaroy State High School – $2930 – to conduct a two-day mental health first aid workshop for teachers, interested parents and community members
  • Boots’n Bulldust – $3156 – towards running an “accidental counsellor” training workshop
  • Graham House (on behalf of the Murgon Men’s Shed) – $2000
  • Graham House – $2000 – Laughter Yoga and to buy resources from the Amanda Gore workshop that can be loaned to other groups

Applications for Round 3 of the program are now open and will close on August 29.

Mental health is again the focus, with applications sought from projects that deliver meaningful outcomes that don’t receive support from other recognised channels, and organisations that are directly addressing community welfare.

After the distribution of the Round 2 cheques, the recipient of the $15,000 annual grant from the fund was also announced.

This cheque was presented to Ron Knopke, on behalf of the South Burnett Pantry.

The Pantry provides subsidised foodstuffs to local residents every Friday in Kingaroy. Every week more than 100 people are helped.

After paying $35, the customers can take home a hamper with up to $140 worth of fresh and packaged food.

Mr Knopke said the cheque would be used to purchase a new walk-in freezer which was desperately needed.
