A University goal attempt goes astray

The South Burnett Saints have earned a slot in the AFL Darling Downs 2nd Division Grand Final after a strong third-quarter display against University Cougars at Lyle Vidler Oval in Kingaroy on Sunday.

The historic Qualifying Final played before a home crowd wasn’t going to script for the Minor Premiers in the first quarter, with University taking a two goal lead: 3.4 (22) to 1.5 (11) at the first change.

At the half-time break, the visitors were still ahead, although Saints had narrowed the gap: 6.4 (40) to 4.7 (31).

By the three-quarter change, South Burnett were just one point behind and the crowd was starting to roar: 8.5 (53) to 7.10 (52).

The Saints came out strongly in the last quarter taking mark after mark, topped off with accurate shooting.

Cougars’ were denied possession as the Saints kept the ball firmly in their own half.

The visitors managed just one goal in the last quarter while the home team booted home six majors and four behinds.

The final score was 13.14 (92) and 9.6 (60).

Saints’ goals were kicked by  Ty Snow (3), Brad Edwards (3), Jack Day (2), Paul Pressnell (2), Keiran Snow, Kyall Shepherd and Daniel Rogers.

The team thanked their fans for their great support during the match.

While the Saints have gone through to the Grand Final, University have one more chance to fill the other slot. They’ll face Highfields in the second Preliminary Final which will be played in Toowoomba on Sunday (September 7).

The Grand Final is due to be played at Rockville Oval in Toowoomba on Sunday, September 14.
