Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss is congratulated by South Burnett Mayor Wayne Kratzmann

August 21, 2014

Former Kingaroy Shire mayor – and now Deputy PM – Warren Truss has been honoured by having the council meeting chamber in Kingaroy named after him.

Mr Truss has spent many hours in the room, albeit in its old form before the 2010-11 renovations.

He was elected to the Kingaroy Shire Council in 1976 and became Shire Chairman (the then-title for mayor) in 1983, a position he held until he was elected to Federal Parliament in 1990.

Members of Mr Truss’ family, former councillors and council staff, and current councillors gathered in the Chamber on Wednesday morning for the official unveiling of a name plaque.

South Burnett mayor Wayne Kratzmann said it had been Cr Damien Tessmann’s idea to name the Chamber after Mr Truss.

It was then put to a Council meeting.

“There was no debate. It was a unanimous decision,” Mayor Kratzmann said.
