Kingaroy Red Ants president Mick Dugdell with Gus Luxton, from Best Signs, inspect the ground signage ahead of Sunday’s big game

August 9, 2014

The grass has been painted with logos, sponsors’ signs are up, extra spectator stands have been erected and everything’s ready for the TV crew to move in … the South Burnett’s biggest day of rugby league for years is all set to kick off.

The Intrust Super Cup match – the clash of the Seagulls – will get underway at 2:00pm on Sunday afternoon at T.J. O’Neill Oval in Kingaroy.

It will feature two top-five Queensland sides, the Wynnum-Manly Seagulls and the Tweed Heads Seagulls.

The football is sure to be great with only one point separating the pair on the ladder just weeks out from the semi-finals.

Accompanying the teams to Kingaroy will be league ambassador, former NRL and Origin player Ben Ross who played with St George Illawarra, Penrith, Cronulla-Sutherland and South Sydney during his long career.

There will also be two great local games on the day, which is the last round of the South Burnett competition before the semi-finals:

  • At 11:45am, the home team Kingaroy Red Ants will take on the Wondai Wolves.
  • At 4:15pm, the President’s Cup will be decided between the top two sides in the South Burnett competition: Cherbourg and Murgon.

U8s from Kingaroy, Cherbourg, Murgon and Nanango will play between 1:15pm and 1:40pm and will be in action again at half-time during the Intrust Super Cup match.

Gates open at 10:30am. Entry is $10.

Footnote:  Ever wondered how those large advertising banners get painted on football fields so accurately?  The secret’s out … a small robot – basically a computer-controlled paint tin on wheels – was carefully painting the outlines on the T.J. O’Neill Oval’s grass on Friday afternoon.
