August 9, 2014

Most clubs are now well under way with their club championships, and looking forward to the Spring carnivals.

But this weekend will be a big one to get August off to a good start.

Today, for instance, Yarraman will play Nanango in their monthly triples clash – this time in Nanango.

And tomorrow both clubs will join up and get on the bus at 6:30am to have a forty two a side match against Kallangur in Brisbane.

Anyway, here’s what else has been – or will be – happening in lawn bowls around our region:

Yarraman news:

There was a full green in Yarraman last Sunday for the Lions Club’s “Birthday Bash”.

This was a full day program, starting off with a barbecue breakfast and followed by two games: 21 ends to start with, and then one of 16 ends.

Scoring made it interesting – two for an end and six for a win – which soon sorted out the stayers from the players.

The home team took out the honours with 60 points, and Nanango’s No 1 team were runners up with 53.

The winners were Jenny Moore, Graham Heaton and Col Mercer with skip Daphne Stewart.

Nanango’s No 1 team was Evelyn Jensen, Trevor George and Brian Havell, with club President Athol Jensen as skip.

The Sportsman’s Award was collected by Woodford Number Two: Liz Frawley, Eunice Smith and G. Derriman with skip Merv Dunn.

Yarraman are also gradually catching up with their championship calendar.

One match of interest occurred last weekend when President Brian Dugdell teamed with George Wolski to score a big win against David Douglass and Kerry Knowles

Dugdell scored some big numbers early on and led 19-3 at 11 ends.

But a couple of fours and a six on the next side of the card meant Dugdell romped in 39-16.

The Ladies “A” Final will be played next Wednesday between Kay Dugdell and Jenny Moore.

Finally, in Wednesday’s Social:

  • Alison Anderson and Eunice Smith def. Eileen Elliott and Yvonne Schultz 21-7

Kilcoy news:

Now let’s catch up with Kilcoy:

The Men’s Triple Championship game was played on Sunday, and Jeff Welden, Noel Lanes and Tony Gray defeated Peter Stanton, Greg Now Staniforth and Alex McCloskey

This was followed by the Ladies B Championship Final on Monday, where Margaret Worrall defeated Kathy Hill in a very close game of 38 ends (it was one of those games where both players really deserved to win, but in the end Margaret was the victor scoring 25-24)..

In Pennants, the Men’s Pennant team had another win last Saturday at home against Beachmere. Next week is a bye.

Meanwhile, the Ladies played their first pennant game on Tuesday and went down to Solander Lake. They played a return match yesterday, and I hope to have the results for you next week.

In other news, Jeff Welden won Star of the Green and plays John Worrall next week.

And on Monday, the Ladies will play at Lowood in the Mayor’s Cup
