The weather has been quite good for bowling lately: a cold start for each day, but no real wind.

That equates to great conditions in my book.

Hope it does in yours too.

Now here’s my wrap-up of what’s been happening in regional bowls this week:

* * *

Yarraman news:

Twice each month the Yarraman and Nanango bowls clubs face off in a rotational triples clash – once at Nanango, and then a return match in Yarraman.

Last Saturday all roads led to Yarraman.

The “Timbertowners” had thrashed Nanango at Nanango a couple of weeks earlier, so last weekend’s contest was hotly contested.

Twelve teams hit the green chasing a win on points, playing two games with five points for a win and two for each end.

Nanango President Athol Jensen and wife Evelyn teamed with Lew Saunders to score 46 points and clinch bragging rights.

But a run-down of the board is interesting:

  • Athol Jensen, Evelyn Jensen and Lew Saunders – 46
  • Helene Johnson, Kev Profke and Bev Profke – 44
  • Neil Johnston, Christie MacLeod and Andy Box – 36
  • Leo Robinson, Nev Lawrence and Keith Carroll – 33
  • Merv Fitch. Doreen Fitch and Daphne Stewart – 31
  • Brian Havell, Henry Bliesner and Lyn Halliday – 27
  • Rob Douglass, Todd Currell and Sandra Currell – 27
  • John Moore, Jenny Moore and George Wolski – 27
  • Bob Hall, Ben Pratap and Woody Hammond – 27
  • Warren Arthur, Delvin Powys and Doris Drew – 20
  • Horst Myer, Ron Lucas and Alison Anderson – 18
  • Neil Currell, Di Currell and John Beattie – 12

Some exciting matches in the Men’s Championship pairs were played during the week.

  • Robbie Douglass and Neil Currell defeated Neil Johnston and Christie MacLeod 19-15
  • John Moore and Todd Currell defeated John Beattie and Ron Lucas 30-11
  • Brian Profke and Merv Fitch defeated Horst Meyer and Leo Robinson 17-13

Ladies Club Day was on Wednesday, and the Club Trophy was contested with one game over 18 ends, with the biggest winning margin to decide the winners.

And they were:

  • Winners: Glenda Wolski and Allison Anderson def. Gloria Anderson, Di Currell and Margaret Willoughby 21-11
  • Runners-up (the smallest winning margin): Lorri Holmes, Bev Profke and Eunice Smith def. Helene Johnson. Lola Harper and Eileen Elliott 21-20
  • Daphne Stewart, Ron Lucas and John Beattie def. John Moore, Nev Lawrence and Leo Robinson 20-16
  • Kev Profke, Horst Meyer and Jenny Moore drew with Neil Currell, Robyn Diercke and Yvonne Schultz 20-all

Kingaroy news:

Last Sunday, Kingaroy held Jackpot Pairs.

Twelve teams participated over two games, with the winners determined by the amount of games won and the combined winning margin.

The winners were Brigitte Kung and Kev Raffin: 2 wins – combined winning margin 9

The runners up were Rhonda Costello and Glen Turner: 2 wins – combined winning margin 2.

Sadly, there were no jackpot winners.

On Wednesday, in Fours:

  • Gladys Slatter, Felipe Munoz, Norma Rook and Maureen Kemp def. Col McBride, June Olsson, Annette O’Brien and Beryl Woods 22-18
  • Peg Robinson, Merv Wolski, Glen Yeates and Val Crawford def. Bess Thorp, Marj Moore, Steve Carland and Maureen Semgreen 26-24

And in Triples, Des Richards, Wanda Carland and Val Jeppesen def. Evelyn Taylor, Bob Bougoure and Sharon Yeates 23-19.

On Thursday, in Triples and Pairs, there was almost a full green.

In Triples:

  • Robbie Johnson, Hugh Harrison and Malcolm Macleod def. Jeff Turner, Merv Anderson and Paul Marychurch 21-14
  • Fred Keding, Felipe Munoz and Ray Maclaren def. Darcy Munro, Gladys Slatter and John Coppard 21-18
  • Keith Muller, Bob Bougoure and Dave Clapperton def. Briggitte Kung, Beryl Woods and Alan Irwin 22-21
  • Des Richards, Ben Pratap and Kev Raffin def. Col McBride, Maree Millard and Richie Patterson 22-20
  • Dave Woods, Ross Olsson and Ray Crawford def. Harry Read, Geoff Clutterbuck and Bob Robinson 19-14

And in Pairs, Steve Carland and Col Kratzmann def. Barry O’Brien and Bronwyn Grant 21-12.

Nanango news:

In Scroungers last Friday, Lew Saunders topped the leaderboard with 63 points.

The the next two closest were Ben Pratap with 59 points, and Greg Pogson with 58 points.

On Tuesday in the Men’s Social, with conditions of play 1 for an end and 4 for a win:

  • Cec Bracken and Allan Ward – 13
  • Lew Saunders and Bob Hall – 12
  • Trevor George and Jim Fowler – also 12

We will stop there…

And on Wednesday in the Ladies Social, Lyn Halliday and Sue Tucker def. Sylvia Fanning, June McKee and Kerry Little 29-11.

Now here’s a date for the diary:

Nanango will be holding their Winter Carnival on Saturday, August 16. It will start with Open Pairs at 12:00 noon. And then on Sunday 17th, there’ll be a Mixed ours contest with a 9:30am start. Looks like a great weekend!

Kilcoy news:

Kilcoy’s Mixed Championships are well under way, and there’ll be several matches coming up in the next few days.

Christmas in July – sponsored by Ron Glover – was a great success, with 28 players on the green.

The Winners on a countback looking for winning margin were Jeff Welden, Marie Thompson and Beryl Ferguson who defeated Jan Elliot, Nelly Herbert and Brett Kelly 23-13.

The Runners-Up were Lester Bechly, Pauline Lawson and Flora Kelly who defeated Sharon Walker, Kathy Hill and Col Ferguson 23-15.

Other scores of interest:

  • Dorothy Kranenbring, Margaret Worrall, Fay Vicary and Liz Frawley def. Noel Lanes, Bert Christie, Dot McVeich and Ernie Herbert 19-15
  • John Glanville, John Worrall, Val Wells and Terry Pratten def. Tony Gray, Dave Scott, Jenny Edwards and Kelly Charters 15-14

Next week, the Jackpot Bowls jackpot stands at $201. And in the Star of the Green contest, Bert Christie will play Jeff Welden.

Finally, the first game of the Ladies Pennant will be held on August 5 at Solander Lake.
