The Ration Shed Museum’s new sporting exhibition, which will be officially opened at Cherbourg next month, won’t just feature all the achievements of the town’s male inhabitants … there’s room for the women, too!

The Play the Ball exhibition will feature a “Wall Of Fame” in the old Boys Dormitory as well as a special room just for rugby league.

Then there’s the boxing display, videos and loads of artefacts …

But Cherbourg’s marching girls haven’t been forgotten.

Photographs of the girls’ troops from the 1950s and 1960s show them sporting their crisp uniforms and ready to put on displays of marching skill.

The women from Cherbourg’s “Many Threads” sewing group are now recreating some of these old uniforms in time for the official opening of the exhibition, which will take place on July 7 during NAIDOC Week.

The exhibition will be open to the public on the NAIDOC Fun Day on July 8.
