Cherbourg Junior Police Rangers have been selected as one of four outstanding NRMA Insurance Community Grant recipients in the running to win the NRMA Insurance People’s Choice Award – but it’s now up to you to make sure they win!

If the project receives the most votes at www.communitygrantsprogram.com.au/rangers its funding could triple.

NB. Voting starts at 9:00am tomorrow (July 1)

Cherbourg Junior Police Rangers is an early intervention program for indigenous young people aged 9-13 which aims to provide practical life and social skills, develop leadership and teamwork skills, and enhance cultural awareness.

The program has been running since 2011 and in that time no child participating in the program has come to the attention of police for any negative or anti-social behaviour.

Project Manager Louise Thompson said they were excited the Cherbourg Junior Police Rangers have been nominated for the NRMA Insurance People’s Choice Award.

“The most exciting thing about the project is seeing the changes in the children who participate,” she said.

“Their self-esteem improves, they are more respectful towards elders, teachers, Police and the community. There have also been positive relationships that have been formed between the participants, the Police and wider community as part of this program.

“Winning the NRMA Insurance People’s Choice Award, and potentially tripling our funds, would give us help to ensure we can continue this successful program in the community.”

NRMA Insurance Community and Sustainability Operations Manager Lee McDougall said the NRMA Insurance Community Grants program and People’s Choice Award aimed to support people around Australia who dedicate their time and energy to making their community safer, more sustainable and better prepared to respond to emergencies.

“We are very impressed with the work the Cherbourg Police and Cherbourg Junior Police Rangers are doing to help contribute to reducing crime in the local area,” Mr McDougall said.

“The winner of the People’s Choice Award will be chosen by popular vote and will triple their original funding. However if the Cherbourg Junior Rangers project earns 1000 votes, they’ll still double their funding. So it’s crucial that everyone in the area gets behind the project and votes.”

Voting for the NRMA Insurance People’s Choice Award closes on Thursday, July 31.
