Who put the roo in the stew? Celebrity TV chef Mark Olive at Cherbourg on Tuesday

June 25, 2014

Healthy eating can have a traditional flavour, too … that was the message TV chef Mark Olive (aka “The Black Olive”) shared with Cherbourg residents on Tuesday.

Mark was brought to town in a collaboration between Gundoo Day Care Centre and the Health And Community Services Workforce Council, the peak body for Queensland’s health and community services workforce.

He cooked up some lean kangaroo meat on a barbie, but it wasn’t just any old ‘roo … this was extra tasty, herb-encrusted kangaroo, coated with a special mix of traditional “bush tucker” spices and sauces.

Mark said the ‘roo was not only a tasty and healthy alternative to beef and lamb, but it was also cheaper to buy.

Mary Russell, from the Workforce Council, said Gundoo was keen to support families and promote healthy nutrition for children.

Gundoo is also working in with Barambah Health to promote family health checks.

Gundoo director Jacqui Tapau said there were currently 81 children at Gundoo, ranging in age from six weeks to five years.  Most of the children attend the centre daily, which has a qualified teacher on site.

Some of the older children from Gundoo were special guests at the cooking display.

PS. Mark Olive had some interesting news for fans … a new cooking show could be on the way
