The National PigGas Extension Program will be holding a workshop in Kingaroy on July 1 to explain the Federal Government’s Carbon Farming Initiative and opportunities for pig producers.
The workshop will also provide hands-on training on how to use the Pork Industry Greenhouse Gas Calculator (PigGas) to calculate on-farm greenhouse gas emissions.
PigGas uses farm data such as diets, feed intakes and pig growth, waste treatment systems, energy use, transport and pig sales data.
There are opportunities to trade saved emissions as Australian Carbon Credit Units.
Also some piggeries may be able to generate on-site energy to power their piggeries by capturing and burning methane from covered effluent ponds.
PigGas can highlight problem areas such as inefficiencies in feed utilisation and wastage and possible changes in waste treatment and reuse systems.
Producers must have a working knowledge of using Microsoft Excel to attend the workshop, and should bring along their own laptop computer with Excel 2010 or 2013 software installed.
The workshop is part of the National PigGas Extension Program and is funded by Ian Kruger Consulting, the Federal Government and Australian Pork Limited.
The workshop is free of charge and limited to 20 places. Registration is essential.
