The iconic Ban Ban Springs sign located near the junction of the Burnett and Isis Highways is currently being restored.
The sign acknowledges the nearby springs, of great significance to the Wakka Wakka people, from which waters flow into the nearby Barambah Creek.
The springs, a traditional stopping place for travellers, are the first place in Queensland to have been formally registered as an Aboriginal cultural heritage site.
North Burnett Regional Council Mayor Don Waugh said barricades had been erected around the original structure by the Department of Transport and Main Roads due to safety concerns.
“Council, on behalf of the Department of Transport and Main Roads is currently restoring parts of the sign and will replace the structural framework in its entirety.”
Works on the sign are expected to be completed by the end of this month, weather permitting.
